The Fringe component of the 1994 Festival of Arts will have 2 weeks of intensive programme from 22 May - 5 June with spill over till the 12 June. From its humble beginnings in the 1984 Festival when 12 groups were featured in 34 performances at 13 venues, this year's Fringe (in its 6th year) has expanded to become a fun-filled event that is keenly awaited by the public. Fringe 94 will see a total of 106 groups representing 13 countries with over 295 activities at 30 venues.

Fringe has grown in popularity since it was first started in 1984. The aims of the Fringe have remained unchanged over the years — to a create a greater awareness of the Festival by bringing the arts to the people and instill an air of festivity for the event. This is also the opportunity for newcomers to the theatre scene to show their talent. Singaporean groups form a sizeable proportion of the Fringe giving it a strong, Singapore identity.

Fringe is fun, friendly, frisky and most of all, it is largely free. 1994 is designated as the Year of the Family. Hence, many special events are geared to the family. These are Fringe in the Park, Film Fiesta, Fringe for Kids and the Festival Banner. All these events are aimed at promoting family togetherness while celebrating the arts.

And to kick off the Festival of Arts, join in the revelry when Orchard Road comes alive on Sunday, 22 May with the Festival Parade.

So be there to catch it all!
