For the Fringe, the Singapore Amateur Players will be staging The Curse of Nuo (Nuo Yuan), a tragic, mysterious play written by Chinese playwrights Xu Xinjian and Zhang Yulong. Inspired by the colourful and intricate rituals of nuo, an ancient Chinese ritual of the Guizhou province, The Curse of Nuo dramatises the story of the Luo family who faces a deadly curse and great tragedy. The Curse of Nuo successfully welds contemporary Chinese theatre with elements of ancient folk culture and has been highly praised for its innovativeness, incorporating song, dialogue, dance and martial arts.
