Not forgetting to appreciate the past...
Postcards from Rosa marks a significant departure from the rest of my directing repertoire in that it is at its heart a very simple and heartwarming story. The dramatic monologue is for me one of the most challenging forms of "live" performance and is a powerful reminder of the lure of theatre - its ability to move audiences both young and old alike.
This journey has been an inspiring one and I had the luxury of working with some of the finest individuals in the industry - Ekachai, my dear friend and mentor who has much faith in a newbie like me and Sebastia, Suven, Ashley and Philip - all of whom are at the pinnacle of their respective fields; Lee Lee and my crew who work tirelessly, the good people of Katong Antique House and other Peranakan families and friends who patiently gave me tutorials in the rich culture. And of course my leading lady, thespian and theater doyenne Neo Swee Lin whose perfection in craft can only be matched by her sense of professionalism.
The play's theme of memories and the ephemerality of time has made me realize the importance of living life fully whilst not forgetting to appreciate the past.
Finally, this play is dedicated to the memory of my late grandmother who suffered a tragic stroke and never could walk again, and my 83-year-old Hiang Yee (or Aunty Chilli) who brought us all up and sewed the beautiful quilt you see today in the performance. Enjoy yourself and remember to hug your family today.
