This controversial play was first produced in Singapore in November 1980 and given a staged reading at the La Mama Theatre in New York in May 1985. The Straits Times of 16 December 1989, summing-up significant events of the last decade wrote: "ONE YEAR BACK HOME breaks down audience's bias against Singapore works, playing to capacity crowds."
Through the eighties, it has become recognized as a landmark play also for the boldness of its theme and commensurate language, marking further progress in the making of a distinct Singapore theatre in the English language. This theatre came of age in the eighties and ONE YEAR BACK HOME is a major contribution.
