Main Tulis Group (MTG) is Singapore’s only collective that works on developing English and Malay plays. The emphasis is on “main” and “tulis”—writing organically, without restrictions—while also being about playwriting as a craft.

The group organises regular readings of works-in- progress and is known for its dramatised readings showcase ETA : 9 MIN at Centre 42’s yearly event, Late-Night Texting. MTG also partners with institutions such as the Esplanade and the National University of Singapore to conduct outreach events on writing and mentor young writers.

As part of the residency, members of MTG were involved in Centre 42's programmes through invited readings, focus groups and discussions. This enabled them to help promote and support playwriting in all languages, as well as support practitioners at all levels of experience in Singapore.

Take a look at their 'Residency Milestones' below for more on their residency!

MTG hopes to find more presentational opportunities in the future, and pursue further collaborations with partners
in Malaysia and Indonesia to support playwriting on a regional level.

MTG organised a successful script circle in July 2021, in which public participants were invited to join in a script reading and sharing session. There were 5 participants who submitted scripts and 2 participants who observed/read. There was a mix of Malay and non-Malay participants. This event was done during pandemic restrictions, hence the number was kept small, ART tests were taken and social distancing was observed. This was their fourth script circle, in which MTG opens their sessions to fellow writers, actors and practitioners in Singapore.

MTG embarked on a new collaboration with Kuala Lumpur-based theatre company, Panas-Panas Theatre. Building on Panas-Panas Theatre's successful series of online reads titled Main Baca, MTG curated and presented a reading of eight scripts, one by each MTG member. This was held over three sessions and were attended by participants from Singapore and Malaysia.

Great feedback and healthy discussions were received based on the curated themes:

  • Taboo Topics in Singapore Theatre
  • Absurdism in Singapore Theatre
  • Language in Malay Theatre

MTG has been nurturing a 5-year-long relationship with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Malay Language Society, mentoring students on their annual Pentas Budaya production. Each production explores challenging themes such as mental health, religion and sexual identity. Notably, the 2021 production was a 360-degree virtual video performance, resulting from a postponed live performance in 2020. MTG is pleased to continue their relationship in 2023 and support the passion and craft of a next generation of practitioners and arts lovers.
