Body Text

This publication is a documentation of the arts community's struggle against censorship in Malaysia. Whether in the capital city Kuala Lumpur or in the villages of the East coast, artists work to preserve their art forms and to expand the boundaries of artistic expression against the backdrop of licenses, permits, bans and an array of restrictive laws.

Freedom for the creative arts is often a reliable barometer and test of the level of free speech and expression in a society. It is hoped that this publication will stimulate further discussion and debate on what constitutes a free and open democratic society which is the lifeblood of the creative arts.
