Jia Yi is an arts practitioner based in Singapore. She has been involved in theatre since her secondary school days and was trained in ARTivate, the youth wing of Drama Box, a local theatre company that creates works that raise social awareness and inculcate civic responsibility. She was also a member of Emergency Shelter, an artist training and research programme under Emergency Stairs, an international experimental arts group based in Singapore.
Jia Yi’s practice involves drama education and performing in the theatre and film mediums. She has also ventured into other roles such as that of a producer, documentation writer, and facilitator. Jia Yi was involved in both acting and facilitation roles with Drama Box’s theatre-in-education shows such as “Girl in The White Sand Box” and “Momo”. She is currently a bilingual drama educator at The Learning Connections Pte. Ltd, engaging preschool students through drama, music and movement, visual arts and storytelling.
In her exploration of Theatre for Young Audience, she performed in an immersive theatrical experience for babies titled “You Can Reach The Sky”. In 2020, she co-created and performed in a series of online videos on the “Babies Book Club” platform, an online interactive play space for babies. Jia Yi has also performed in plays that involved object puppetry, rod puppetry, life-sized puppets, and mask work.
