Xiaoyi received the\\u0026nbsp;Young Artist Award,\\u0026nbsp;Singapore\\u2019s highest award for young arts practitioners,\\u0026nbsp;awarded by the National Arts Council in 2016.\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003ESince 2021, Xiaoyi has been invited to be the artist-in-residence at\\u0026nbsp;\\u003Ca href=\\u0022https:\\\/\\\/zuniseason.org.hk\\\/\\u0022\\u003EZuni Icosahedron\\u003C\\\/a\\u003E\\u0026nbsp;(Hong Kong).\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003E\\u003Cstrong\\u003EExperimental Arts\\u003C\\\/strong\\u003E\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003EA multi-faceted and multi-talented artist, Xiaoyi was involved in over 70 theatre productions as a director, a playwright, and\\\/or an actor over the past two decades.\\u0026nbsp;On stage, he is considered one of the most acclaimed male actors from the Singapore theatre scene; as a playwright, he has penned more than 40 plays and is one of the nation\\u2019s most prolific playwrights.\\u0026nbsp;\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003EAs a director, the cornerstones of Xiaoyi\\u2019s oft lauded but controversial work are unsurprisingly experimentation, introspection, and poetry. Between 2017 and 2019, he created three new works under his\\u0026nbsp;\\u003Cem\\u003E\\u003Cem\\u003EPostdramatic Series\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E\\u0026nbsp;in Esplanade that challenged the often-sacred theatre traditions here by introducing a new exploratory theatre format to the discomfort of his audiences. Xiaoyi\\u2019s work often polarize, drawing both praise and debate. An example of his much-discussed works,\\u0026nbsp;\\u003Cem\\u003E\\u003Cem\\u003EJourney to Nowhere\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E\\u0026nbsp;was a creative response to the then-newly unveiled government\\u2019s cultural policy paper \\u2013\\u0026nbsp;\\u003Cem\\u003E\\u003Cem\\u003EOur SG Arts Plan 2018-2022\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E.\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003EStarting with\\u0026nbsp;\\u003Cem\\u003EEinstein in the Carpark\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E\\u0026nbsp;in 2018, Xiaoyi began to explore the relationship between art and science, expanding theatre space to other fields. In 2019, he started a new project,\\u0026nbsp;\\u003Cem\\u003ENo More Theatre\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E, to develop collaboration between digital technology and arts, including AI, AR, VR and More. He devotes himself to seeking the development and breakthrough of theatre forms.\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003E\\u003Cstrong\\u003ECultural Exchanges\\u003C\\\/strong\\u003E\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003EA strong proponent of artistic exchanges across artforms, Xiaoyi has been actively promoting dialogues and creation across cultural and geographical lines for many years, particularly the exchange between tradition and contemporary art forms.\\u0026nbsp;\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003EAs the Artistic Director, Xiaoyi has curated the\\u0026nbsp;\\u003Cem\\u003ESouthernmost Project\\u003C\\\/em\\u003E, an annual, first-of-its-kind \\u201carts festival for the future\\u201d in Singapore since 2017. The inter-cultural festival has regularly brought prominent artists across the region to Singapore for exchange with local artistic community. This inadvertently supports a new network of artists interested to work collaboratively across diverse artforms in Asia.\\u003Cstrong\\u003E\\u0026nbsp;\\u003C\\\/strong\\u003E\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003EXiaoyi is also often invited to prominent cultural exchanges as a speaker, a curator and\\\/or as an artist to collaborate with other established artists from Asia and Europe. To date, his body of works has been staged in many major cities including Singapore, Nanjing, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo, Yokohama, Yogyakarta, Bali, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, London, Zurich, Brussels, Toronto and more.\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003E\\u003Cstrong\\u003ETalents Incubation\\u003C\\\/strong\\u003E\\u003C\\\/p\\u003E\\r\\n\\r\\n\\u003Cp\\u003EAn educator at heart, Xiaoyi keeps a keen eye on the development of art talents in Singapore and the Asia Pacific region. Over the years, he has started and helmed several talent development platforms in Singapore- the Practice Lab (The Theatre Practice), Emergency Shelter and most recently, the Emergency Academy.
