The Misanthrope is the acknowledged masterpiece of Molière (1622 - 73). The portrait of a man doomed to a social wilderness because he cannot concede to convention nor compromise his principles, it is comedy elevated to a tragic plane. With it in this volume are two works of almost equal reputation, Tartuffe and The Imaginary Invalid, together with A Doctor in Spite of Himself - one of the best-known of the farces - and the comedy ballet The Sicilian.
As with The Miser and Other Plays, this collection has been translated for the Penguin Classics by John Wood.
