Body Text
Taken from the titular book of poems by Roger Jenkins, From the Belly of the Carp was the name the first Chinese settlers gave to the south bank of the Singapore River. First performed in 1998 at Jubilee Hall, it depicts the life of ordinary people like the coolies, letter writers, boat builders, and dhobies who loved and laboured with their efforts, experience, dreams, and determination to make Singapore what it is today.
