Body Text

A fable is told, of two men who came in the belly of a Chinese junk to Penang in the late 1800s. These two men, who had never met before, became fast friends on the boat, and shared their spilt blood to swear blood brotherhood in their new life in the Nanyang. In time both men prospered, and eventually built 2 houses on Northam Road, near each other, as a testimony to their enduring friendship.

Our tale is one of memory, spun from the imagination of an avid listener of old Penang family fables, myths, stories and research. We follow these tales as we move, room to room, through the twists and turns of the emergence of our identity and the struggle for self-rule, forged in the fires of war. We see Penang built by will, nurtured by love, and coloured by the passions of its people in union and strife, and wonder how we continue to write our own history today.
