Paris. Anna, widow of banker Glawari, has been left a fortune. It is essential to the finances of Pontevedro that she marries a Pontevedrian rather than a foreigner. The Pontevedrian Ambassador Baron Zeta - whose "highly respectable wife", Valencienne is pursued by Camille de Rossilon - orders his high-living attache Count Danilo to serve his fatherland for a change and marry Anna. The two had been in love in the past, but Danilo was vowed that he will never say "I love you" to Anna. It takes much intrigue and all Anna's wiles to get him to give in so that all can end happily and Pontevedro be saved from bankruptcy.
