These are the years of living digitally.
Our lives are surrounded by technology: the latest, fastest, smallest and the coolest, hidden and invisible, vital and pointless, sinister and purely fashionable. Each fresh generation of computer or communication device brings about a million changes both large and miniscule. Changes that are virtually impossible to track.
Every day we find new ways to exist amongst extremely clever machines. The hard and software we have in our pockets, bags and bedrooms has a capability and capacity that was once inconceivable. So, we too are evolving in this digital realm more than ever before, and there is a danger in passively accepting the coming of a pixel-perfect future.
The challenge then, is to respond creatively and critically to all these tools and gadgets, to discover forms of artistic connection, expression, stories, images and visions that are just beginning to emerge. The Year of Living Digitally suggests a few possibilities - in web, film, sound and performance.
