Ever sat around with friends and griped about your boyfriend or girlfriend till 2 in the morning?
It was over café latte and wanton mee that this play was born. We sat round, sharing juicy moments about our childhood, first kisses, first times, the worst lovers we've ever had, what little girls and boys got up to during mummy's midnight mahjong sessions, canings, losing out to prettier, smarter people... things that all good, gossipy soulmates have done at one time or another.
The only difference was that ours was a conscious decision to sit down and fashion our experiences into a dramatic whole. To turn the oft repeated - "Someone should make your life into a book or movie or play!" into a reality on the stage.
So, with Corinne's pen and pad in hand, we started the interview process and learned a lot about each other and ourselves. We learned that Catherine, for all her good sense, had secret yearnings to study the stars. That Cynthia could rattle us by bursting into tears in the middle of Starbucks. That Jerry is really a naughty boy at heart and that cool cat Sudha is really just as wishy-washy as the rest of us!
The idea of workshopping scripts and devised plays is not new and we don't pretend they are. We would like you to share in this experience with us not as an audience watching "starlets" or celebrities agonizing over how unfair life is, but watch us, as ordinary folk who have our stories to tell, just as you do. Maybe we'll all find we have lots in common after all.
