In ancient time there was a Goddess of Midwifery in Southern China. Women had to pay tribute to the portrait of the Goddess at the point of labour as well as after delivery.
A modern version of the Goddess of Midwifery takes place in Singapore. Her name is Guan Yuniang. She starts her career as a midwife at the age of 22 and has delivered 9,999 babies. These births are recorded in her dairies, which tightly knit into a web of life stories.
Why did Guan learn midwifery? Where was her husband? Did she have any children? The storyteller at the temple sings about the Goddess of Midwifery everyday. Besides the two stories of eternal virtue, one heavenly and one earthly, how much more of such warmth in mankind lingers in the storyteller's songs?
