In 1995, The Substation organised the first Space, Spaces, Spacing conference, exploring the notions of physical, political and personal space in the art community and general public. In 2020, the theme was revisited with a second iteration of the conference, which aimed to take stock of "space" and its various interpretations, and to provoke discussions on its gains and losses.

This double-volume box set is the companion text to both conferences, the volumes provide a snapshot of the Singapore art and political scenes during their time and address the concerns, pressures and anxieties in both contexts. The texts featured include critical reflections on art education, art infrastructure, performance art, cultural policy, censorship and politics. It is hoped that two books, placed side by side, allow convergences and divergences to emerge organically. Speakers include former Substation artistic directors T. Sasitharan, Lee Weng Choy, Audrey Wong and Alan Oei; academics Cherian George, Kenneth Paul Tan and Ray Langenbach; artists Zai Kuning, Subhas Nair; and more.
