precise purpose of being broken is adapted from a collage of texts by playwright and Cultural Medallion recipient Haresh Sharma. Each of these texts floats in a particular and specific universe: open, disembodied, yet inexplicably connected.
This multi-lingual work features characters that are as broken as they are illuminated, and as doomed as they are hopeful. They revisit faded landscapes of their collective memory, pass through familiar spaces both comforting and contentious, and lose their footing on grounds that seem to provide potent signs of recognition.
Directed by Koh Wan Ching, this new presentation of precise purpose of being broken is devised and workshopped over an extended period, and will be performed by Chelsea Crothers, Chng Xin Xuan, Grace Kalaiselvi, Lina Yu and Wendi Wee Hian, with lighting design by Jason Ng, and sound design by Vivian Wang from The Observatory.
There will be a mini tour of the Esplanade Annexe Studio before the performance begins. Doors will open at 20min before the performance starts (e.g., doors open at 7.40pm for the 8pm performance).
You will be given maps that you can use to explore the space with, and you are encouraged to add your own memories to the maps. At the end of the tour, the maps will be collected for redistribution to the audience for the next performance.
