Chameleon is a black-comedy, Broadway-style musical. The show is set in Bugis Street, Singapore towards the end of the 1970's at a time when the City-state's new government was sweeping aside all that stood in the way of progress. The colourful community that existed in Bugis Street at the time was one of the casualties of this process.
The jewel-like names of each of the male/female characters in the show (Jasper, Pearl, Amber and Jade etc) represent anonymity from true identities and their own 'precious' view of themselves within the gaudy trinket box environment of the Crystal Lounge on Bugis Street. Their names also underline self-belief in an ability to shine and sparkle - if only they had the chance.
On the slippery slope towards middle age and the demise of their community - each of the main characters in Chameleon are hiding from reality against the backdrop of this seedy fantasy oasis. When the omni-sexual creature Devine wafts into the Crystal Lounge one evening in search of entertainment, everyone's lives are in for a dramatic change.
