Shirley Valentine is an average housewife. 42 years old, taken for granted by both her husband and her children. Then she does the unthinkable, she packs her bags and heads to an idyllic Greek island. The note she leaves on the kitchen table simply says 'Gone to Greece, back in two weeks'.
The play is a simple yet brilliant portrayal of a woman suddenly on her own - in a bar, on a beach, in a restaurant. This is what Shirley learns to combat as she unravels her own sexual and social identity. The play proves to be both funny and touching.
