I have always felt that a play about identity is something very difficult to do. True enough, the process of reaching the final version of Nevermind was tedious. Three casts have dropped out and the feeling of loss constantly haunts me.
So what is a play about who we are? We tried many angles and ways to look at the issues. There was no satisfactory answer. There might not have any answers at all. Are we descendants of Zheng He (the eunuch admiral, Sang Nila or Raffles? "Confused?", we might say, but what can we do about it.
Many things are not important, just like our own identity. Change the colour of your hair, bleach your skin, be an Ang Moh, change the colour of your IC, do anything you like, it will never matter at all. The whiter the better.
