A Doll's House, written in 1879 by Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen, was considered a controversial play in its exploration of social issues during its time. Set in nineteenth century Europe, A Doll's House challenges the social norms that trap both men and women alike, through the frames of love and societal expectations. It explores the repression of individuality, by underscoring the constructed nature of identity and demonstrating just how tenuous it is.
