Equus, by British playwright Peter Shaffer, was premiered in 1973. It won a Broadway Tony award for Best Play, as well as the New York Drama Critics Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award.
The play has been adapted in an attempt to explore more deeply the underlying theme of how passion and worship has been lost to our modern world. The role of the teenager has evolved into that of a teenage girl because I feel this embodies more clearly the changes in our world... a girl who breaks the bonds of our pre-packaged sterile world is called insane ... a girl who challenges through her sexual awakening our world's model of what a woman should be is driven insane. Or is she?
